Wakefield is known as one of the best communities in Massachusetts for Music Education, earning recognition in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 by the National Association of Music Merchants. Music education as part of the core curriculum assures many educational benefits, such as boosting academic and social skills and lowering disciplinary action and dropout rates. Wakefield is lucky and proud to have a dedicated and talented music staff, led by Mr. Thomas Bankert, Director of Visual and Performing Arts. Their hard work inspires our students to shine and has produced award winning ensembles throughout the Wakefield School system.
The High School boasts three a capella singing groups and two choral ensembles, the largest marching band in the region, a jazz band, concert band, wind ensemble, and two string orchestras. The Middle School has three choruses (grade 5, 6, & 7-8) and an auditioned Chamber Chorus. In addition to similarly divided string orchestras and an auditioned chamber orchestra, there is also a GMS guitar ensemble, two grade level bands and two jazz bands.
Musical theater brings singing and acting together with instrumental music. Lines and songs are memorized, dance numbers are learned, costumes and sets are created, and students are integral to every aspect of these spectacular productions. Both the high school and middle school produce a musical each year. In 2018, GMS produced “Mary Poppins,” and WMHS staged “Cinderella.”
